June 30th – July 4th, 2016
So much can be said about Puerto Rico. We didn’t particularly enjoy this trip, for a myriad of reasons, including:
- Mid Summer weather
- Long flight from Florida
- Holiday weekend
- San Juan insects
- Language barrier
- General hostility toward tourists
- Inability to keep wine below 80° Fahrenheit
We stayed for four nights in Fajardo, and it was rainy all but one of the days. We tried diving but the weather was terrible. We tried venturing over to San Juan to explore, and ran into a wall of insects at the famous historical monument near the port entrance. We tried several different stores in an effort to find some decent bottles of wine that were not temperature spoiled, to no avail.
- Leaving Nola to Ft Lauderdale
- The Southwest line up before boarding caused a lot of confusion…. predictably.
- Going on her first open water dive!
- Old fort in San Juan
- Bugs
- Bugs…
- More bugs
- Catching a Euro match after Bug-aggedon
- Happy Place. Check.
- Funicular
- Island beach
- Ferry to the island
- A great sunny day, on the last day of course.
- Great local restaurant nearby
- Bye bye Puerto Rico… might fly through but probably never to again….
Lindsay’s highlight was a great Peruvian restaurant that we found on the highway near Fajardo coming from San Juan. My highlight, predictably, was a tie between going to Costco and having to ride a funicular to get down to the ferry to the beach.
I am certain that thousands of people enjoy visiting Puerto Rico every year. It was just not the place for us. We tried.

Insects + hot wine = a nightmare. Love the honesty!
